Get Healthy Blog Hop

Today I'm joining in with the Get Healthy bloghop here :) Just have to jump in the shower and sort out the youngest one's breakfast, then will be back with a 'proper' post .........And back, have half an hour before visitors descend. So me and health? How about a timeline?

Born at 7lb 7ozs - and was actually 13 days late, so I suppose I would have been around 5.5lb if I'd been on time. Up to 18 was always on the lowest percentile but not underweight - being 5'1" when I stretch meant that one sorta counteracted the other. But apart from trampolining I hated sports. I mean seriously, what can you do well when you are always the smallest in the class? Running? Netball? Swimming? Exactly!
Then I went vegetarian. Thirty years ago there was nothing, except for a few 'foods' (and I use the term in the very loosest sense of the word!) and they tasted like cardboard and cost a months rent. Couple that with a boyfriend at the time who, even when I lost so much weight I weighed under 7stone in a winter coat, used to tell me I was fat .....well, you do the math.
So my 20's evened out. Average weight - if you wander over to Throwback Thursday here you'll find a few of me looking Miss Average :)
And then the children came along! Yep, you're getting it, even a few knowing nods I imagine. Only put on 3/4 stone with Joseph which I lost straight away. Bit more with Joshua. And then Benjamin. Well you could have laid me on my side and rolled me down a hill!
And now we're at today. And I realise writing this I have spent the last 20 years being overweight.
But I am finally doing something about it. Hitting 50 this year (well, this week actually) and having that heart scare has given me the serious kick up the butt I needed.
I have lost 10lbs since January and am working on my next 10 by July. Tests show my heart is okay, no diabetes but slightly raised cholesterol. So I have dragged My Fitness Pal by Wii back out and dusted it down, am dieting, and Joshua even brought me some weights for my birthday!

It doesn't make sense for me to be overweight. I eat well, especially being veggie, no red meats for me, and lots of protein in Quorn. I love walking. I think my downfall is just lack of willpower in both exercise and eating. If there's nothing bad for me in the house I don't miss it, but if I know Jeff's bought chocolate and biscuits then I have to eat them *downcast, embarrassed face* But, hey, onwards and upwards :)

  1. That's wonderful you've been able to lose so much weight. I'm with you on the chocolate. If it's not there I'm ok, but if it's there I can't put it down.

  7. Oh, it's not easy. I know, believe me. I cut out sugar and I can't eat dairy and I limit my complex carbs - that's what worked for me. good luck to you.

    1. I eat a lot less carbs, one of the many delights of getting older, I can't tolerate it as well. I've always been quite good with sugar - well, once I stopped having 2 teaspoons of sugar in every cup of tea! x

  8. It's tough to lose weight, especially as we get older (which I know, from experience), but it sounds like you're off to a great start so keep it going!

    Best of luck :)

    1. Thanks Mark :) I was told that once you hit 50 it's even harder, so I'm looking at it as urgent now, rather than "oh well, I can try again!" x

  15. I allow myself occasional treats, including 4 Hershey's Kisses a day, you sound English, so do you have them over there? I don't remember. Anyway, its a very small amount of chocolate as a treat each evening.

Trouble with not having temptations around, when you do get to face them, your willpower isn't always strong enough to deal with them.

    1. Hi, yes English (I need to go read my writing to see what gives me away!) No, we don't have Hersheys - you can get it in specialist shops, but very expensive.

Sadly, or not, thanks to hubby and the kids, there is always some form of temptation in the house!

Thanks for stopping by :) x

  20. Great job dragging out the Wii Fit! I've never been thin so I don't know what that's like, but having children would surely make it difficult to stay thin. Did you know that if there was a worldwide famine, only 10% of men would survive one year, but 50% of women would survive one year? And the average length of time women would stay alive is 9 months. We're wired to carry on the species due to our fat stores...joy! ;-)

    1. Oh thank you so much for that info - I can use that next time I'm feeling a bit low about my weight! It is hard when I look at photos of me skinny. But as well as the Wii I have just got myself a swimming buddy, every little helps :) x

  22. Well done on your weight loss so far, keep going. I am 5'2 so can relate to the shorter figure proportions. It is harder as we get older to loss the weight I'm sure, must be something to do with metabolism but it seems like you are on the right track. I'm following you now so will be popping back again soon.

    1. Hi Suzanne, I think you're absolutely right about metabolism slowing down. It's so frustrating. But will keep going so when you come back you can see I'm on target! x

  23. We all are quite obsessed over our weight management, especially as we writers spend long hours at our desks typing away or writing. Walking is a great way to keep the weight in check and limbs mobile.

  26. I've also felt that weight gain, or failure to lose, doesn't make sense. I think by virtue of mere aging, it all gets harder and we have to work harder at it. It ain't fair, but don't feel any shame about enjoying a bit of chocolate. You're on the right track overall, and that's what matters.

  29. Congrats on losing 10 pounds! That's wonderful! And good luck on meeting your goals. Sadly, I think it's harder to keep the pounds off as we get older. I miss the days of not having to worry about what I ate or if I worked out. :)

  30. Well done on the weight loss Suzanne. It is so easy to put on and so hard to loose. I have spent my whole adult life on one diet or another. Now I just eat healthily and try not to overdo it on the 'special occasions' that seem to pop up on a weekly basis. Really pleased that I managed to wear a dress that has been in my wardrobe for 10 years! Still have a few other classic pieces that I want to wear but I will get there

  31. At least you have an awareness of what you need to do and are working on it. Maybe I'll go vegetarian one day, but I do enjoy my fish and chicken and occasional beef and pork. I've cut back at least.
