So....... Child Minding and Fostering

For the last couple of years I've been thinking about going back to childcare, but then my foot put paid to everything! However, ever being positive I'm trying to look forward. I've been offered a part-time job back at the college starting in September teaching Childcare again, which I am really looking forward to. I love teaching, sharing 30 years worth of experience. However, I miss actually caring for them, with Ella even being a bit more self sufficient I feel I am becoming redundant!

So my future - well I still want to finish my writing, make my shoes and make small crafty things. BUT for someone who for nearly 15 years ran 2 day nurseries, had 4 kids, was a governor, PTA bod and actively taking part in Am Dram ..... well,  it's really not enough is it LOL!

When I first started thinking about it I amalgamated the names of the 2 nurseries - Woodpeckers and Little Ducklings and made Little Woodpeckers, registered the web name and then left it. The last few months we've been discussing long term plans, and taken the remaining kids at home feelings about our plans. So today we completed an expression of interest to foster!! We did this 3 years ago but they felt Ella wouldn't cope. So this time we've checked with both SS and her school that we have their support, and we do :) Eeek!

I also decided to register as a childminder. Do you know 3 childminders can work together with 9 children under one roof - any more than 9 and you have to register as a day nursery. So we're toying with the idea of starting a mini-nursery.  As Ricki said to me when we were talking about it - it's what I do well and succeed in - and, let's be honest, love! Would just need to find 2 more people to work with. Anyhow, looked into what I have to do ........
1. Attend a pre-reg course at the end of November - hmmm, that's 4 months wait.
2  Attend a 12 week course which starts in January - so now that's beginning of April, 9 months
3 .Register with Ofsted - so realistically we're looking at around a year wait!!!

Not forgetting......
1. Ofsted charges £35 to register
2. The 12 week course costs £215
3. Need a health check from my doctor - up to £100
4. A Paediatric First Aid Course - dread to think how much that costs!

So 9-12 months and £250+ before I can even hope to start CM! Are they fricking kidding me?! And yet I'm not surprised.

  1. That's so great that you are going to foster some kids! There are so many that need help. One of our friends has fostered quite a few children and I believe adopted at least 2, possibly more.

    1. Thanks JoJo, although we adopted Ella I don't think Jeff will entertain the idea of adopting again - but who knows :) xx

  2. Good luck with it all! I admire people who enjoy taking care of children and are good at it. I'd much rather stick with pets. ;)
