Fostering 'I' ..... A - Z Blog Challenge

As Jeff and I have been foster carers for 3 years this month it seemed the right time to have Fostering as a topic for the A-Z. We're still new enough that we're not jaded yet, but have had a pretty bumpy ride, so fairly realistic in what fostering is really about.

Further information at The Fostering Network

Immunisations - If a child is deemed to need any vaccinations then permission needs to be sought by social services, and, if applicable, the birth parents. Under no circumstances can elective vaccinations be given without authorisation.
ICT - Our local borough provides a laptop for any children in our care to be able to use for homework. It has strong parental controls to prevent anything unsuitable, accidental or otherwise, being accessed. It also prevents access to any social media sites. Equally, as a lot of children have mobile phones consideration needs to be given to the access on that. We provide the children in our care with a monthly top-up on their phone, but without data. It is brought down each evening to charge so they do not have access to it during the night. But also, it is very important to teach children and young people why these safety measures are in place.
Insurance - As a foster carer you should advise your insurance companies that you have foster children in the house / car etc.but it actually made very little difference to our premiums.

  1. I am so glad technology didn't exist when I was growing up. There's soooo much more that has to be done to keep kids safe!
