Fostering 'O' ..... A - Z Blog Challenge

As Jeff and I have been foster carers for 3 years this month it seemed the right time to have Fostering as a topic for the A-Z. We're still new enough that we're not jaded yet, but have had a pretty bumpy ride, so fairly realistic in what fostering is really about.

O IS FOR:
Overnight Stays - It is important that children in care experience normal childhood experiences and staying over at friends certainly comes into that group. Initially as a foster carer you would need to check with social services, you need to be sure that social services have no reason to deny the overnight stay. In the first few months of a new placement it is wise to continue this practice. After that, the child's social worker may agree to you making the decisions without involving them. Of course, as with any child you would then do your own checks, where are they staying, talk to the parents, etc.

  1. Hi Suzanne - there's so much bureaucracy to it ... but equally so much at stake for the child, and for the foster carers ... I have so much admiration for you - cheers Hilary
